Music Copying and Engraving

Publishing-quality printouts from your manuscript. Score and/or parts.

Classical music ("non-pop"), of any style or period is my specialty.

Uncomplicated transpositions free of charge.

• By the frame: 35¢/frame. A frame is one bar on one staff containing any music (i.e., non whole-rest measures). For example, a four-bar piano piece would be 8 frames if both staves contained music. The simplest way to count the number of frames is to multiply the number of measures in a piece by the number of staves, then subtract the full-bar rests.

• By the hour: $35/hour. If your score contains graphical or non-standard elements, then this method will be used. An estimate will be offered after viewing the music.

After digitally typesetting your score, I will send you a preliminary copy in PDF format for proofreading. Authorial changes at this stage cost $35/hour. Of course, I will fix my own errors at no charge.

When I'm finished with your piece, I will e-mail you the final PDFs and a computer-generated audio rendition, if desired. I can also mail or give this to you on a CD. You can bring the PDFs to Kinko's or another print shop for printing and binding.

Referral discount

I will give you a 10% discount on our next collaboration, if your referral results in a new client.

How to prepare your score for copying

Here is a checklist of things to do which will make things go more smoothly and quickly:

• write the measure numbers at the beginning of each system and page numbers at the top of each page
• the manuscript doesn't have to be pristine, but should be legible
• it is in your best interest that your work be finished. If not, then you will be paying for the extra time by the hour for any changes or amendments to the score.
• do not give me the originals of the score. I often need to make red-pencil marks in the scores, so please send me copies.
• point out any special notation issues, such as graphics or non-standard symbols or usage of symbols
• be sure to include the title, your name, and other information you want on the score, such as a title page, instrumentation, performance instructions, preface, etc.
• let me know in what format you would like the pages to be (e.g., 10x12, 8½x11, landscape or portrait, etc.)
  
• inform me of any unusual font requirements

Privacy Policy

Your music is owned by you, and I will never distribute it or any other files associated with it, including audio files, to any third party without your consent. I do keep copies of manuscripts as well as the digital files for at least a year, unless you request shorter or longer filing, in case you need to make revisions to your work.

Richard Caldwell is based in New York City. He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music composition and theory and has been working with Finale® since 1995. He has extensive graphic design experience, with knowledge of Adobe® Photoshop®, InDesign®, Illustrator®, and GoLive®, as well as Microsoft PowerPoint. He also offers tutoring in the use of Finale® software and in music theory.
